Revealing Hidden Jewels-Dee Jay JSpade

Dee Jay JSpade

JSpade!  I met this cat on a humbug when I was getting tired of the humdrum.  I’m chilling, maybe 2 ‘Funky Goodtimes’ ago at Cabana with Soul Infinite, around the September or October joint.  We roll in, I built with GDig real quick, the music was alright, a lot of surface scratching funk as I call it.  Like not so funky funk if you get what I’m saying.  Just as I got ready to throw the towel in on another disappointing music seeking night, ‘can you imagine Doobie in your funk, Huh-ho!’, I got a wake-up call.  On the real though, nothing against Funky Goodtime, I feel it when certain cats spin mostly, but I had never heard this JSpade cat before.  So he gets up there for his set as I’m getting ready to leave, and he kicks his joint off with Newbirth’s full length version of ‘I can’t understand it!  That’s my joint!  Sith knows, Sith knows.  I was taken aback some cuz I was about to leave, but you can’t leave when that’s spinning.  So I stayed a little longer and listened to some more of his set.  He played some heat.

Needless to say, JSpade is now spinning Hip Hop alongside Geezus once a week at the Underworld right behind Chili’s on West End (2320 West End Avenue 615-248-2550).  It’s owned by Kaz, the same cat that owned Kazu’s down in Cummings Station (near the old Bar Car).  I have not been able to make it out to JSpades’ venue yet, but I have made it to the Underworld.  It’s a nice intimate spot with a good menu ranging from bagels to gourmet pizzas, all for under $8, they have an extremely cute bartender working behind a full bar, a couple TVs and good music.  It doesn’t get much better than that.  There’s plenty of seating and even a couch in the back area.  Be sure to check out Reggae night every Friday down there too.   Remember, Hip Hop with JSpade & Geezus every Wednesday from 9:00pm until and & Reggae every Friday from 10:00pm until.

A.T.
